According to the Centre for Education Policy Development (1995,15), a role is essentially a set of expectations imposed on the educator by the Department of Education, learners, curriculum innovators, educationists, other educators, parents, critics and society in general.
I think the role of teachers is changing and teachers should realize the changes. The problem is how can we as teachers cope with the change and prepare our selfs to meet the requirment of new type of knowledge building.
Binkley et.al. (2010), Assessment andTeaching of 21st Century Skills (ATC21S), approach 21st century learning through a focus on the following skills:
Ways of thinking
. Creativity and innovation
. Critical thinking, problem solving,
. decision making
. Learning to learn, metacognition (knowledg about cognitive processes)
Ways of working
. Communication
. Collaboration (teamwork)
Tools for working
. Information literacy
. Information and communication technology literacy
Living in the world
. Citizenship ‐ local and global Life and career
. Personal and social responsibility including cultural awareness and competence (Binkley et.al., 2010, p.1).
To achieve these skills we need as teachers to find new ways and strategies of knowledge building.
According to (Friesen, S. & Lock, J.V. 2010).
"The changing roles of district and school administrators to develop
leadership practices to support high performing school jurisdictions and schools
in the 21st century, will involve a clear understanding of 21 st century
learning, both the requirements needed for strong learning, which come from the
learning sciences, and an understanding of the ways in which networked digital
technologies enable, enhance, extend and deepen that learning".
